Have you ever thought, mindfulness sounds lovely, but I don’t have time for it? You’re not alone.
Missed our first post, Step Aside Gurus, Mindfulness Is for Everyone? Check it out for a quick introduction to the idea.
Most people picture think of mindful living as scheduled meditations, weekend retreats, or yoga that defies the normal range of human movement.
There’s good news. It’s much more accessible than you may think. You don’t need to wait for those perfect conditions, centred around pure calm or silence. And, you definitely don’t need a candle-lit mountain-view meditation session (but a pretty view is always a bonus!). The key is knowing where to look or, should I say, notice…
Mindfulness thrives within the thick of your real life: those small, ordinary moments. Which means there’s a high chance you’re already being more mindful than you think.
Moments That Count
– That first warm sip of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate that makes your shoulders drop
– Watching bubbles form and pop as you wash up
– Feeling the sun on your face as you step outside
– Noticing a pleasant smell while passing a bakery
– Smiling at your pet doing something ridiculous
It’s easy to dismiss these tiny moments as “not enough,” but they matter. Research suggests that short practices, centred on noticing, can reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, strengthen attention, and increase everyday wellbeing.
Mini Practice Box: 15-Second Check-In
- Look around and pick one thing that feels neutral or pleasant
- Notice one detail about it
- Take one slow breath
- Carry on with your day
There’s no finish line with mindfulness, no level to unlock, and no you’re officially doing it now certificate. What matters is noticing the moment you remember to pay attention to.
If you’ve ever paused for a second to notice something… anything… you’ve already taken the first step.
This post is showing that you are already more mindful than you think. Later in the series we’ll explore why these moments work, delve into the core elements, and explain why these tiny shifts are important for your wellbeing.
If you’d like to make your moments a little more intentional, Out The Box Presents creates mindful experience boxes designed to do exactly that. Simple, playful, and rooted in the same research that says the small stuff counts.
